'I Love novels because novels are not just about what people do, but about what people think.'

Larry's Party is a novel which I have really enjoyed. Shields is writing from the point of view of a man, partly in response to being called a feminist, partly as a means to do the unexpected: tell the tale of an ordinary man. The structure of the novel, which shifts through period's in Larry's life, mimics the Larry's masculine, convoluted thought processes. The reader is constantly a step behind Larry's actions (which are told after the fact) until the final chapter when we are finally able to join the action, this maintains a sense of emotional distance from the protagonist.
