I think this relates to the concept of man's animal urge for sex. The need to complete the act, rather than consider who it's performed with, or perhaps why, just fulfilling a basic human need much like when one fills ones stomach when hungry.Atwood can make for quite complicated reading; whilst a part of me enjoys her novels, another part of me struggles as they have a stream of conscious quality that i find hard to keep up with.
